How do the Huawei inverter and LUNA energy storage systems work?

If you’re anything like me, you’ve found yourself Googling solar inverters on a Friday night and wondered when you swapped afterwork drinks for solar power research. The transition sneaks up on you, doesn’t it? But here we are talking about solar, so let’s make the most of it!

As more homeowners jump on the solar bandwagon (300 megawatts of solar panel energy was added to WA households in 2020 – hoorah!), the number of products on the market increases, which means it’s tougher to figure out which PV products will be the most efficient.

Because I geek out on solar power, I’m always up to date with the latest (and most efficient) PV products on the market. And one of my favourite inverter brands is Huawei Inverters and I’m going to tell you why. But first, a little inverter basics.

Single phase inverter vs. and 3-phase inverter

In case you’re wondering, an inverter is an integral piece to your PV system. It turns DC electricity (what solar panels produce) into AC electricity (what your appliances use). And you need one of these bad boys for your solar panel system to work.

There are three main types of inverters on the market, including central inverters, micro inverters and string inverters. String inverters connect a series of panels to one inverter, and these are the most suitable for homeowners because they’re highly efficient, low cost and robust.

There are two types of string inverters – single phase inverters and 3-phase inverters. The one you’ll need will depend on your electricity connection (single phase or three phase).

Single phase connection

A single-phase connection is the most common for homes. It means the electricity from the grid or solar panels will flow through one active wire.

Three phase connection

A three-phase connection means you have three active wires. These connections are used in larger homes and commercial properties because they can transmit more power.

To simplify – if you have a single phase connection, you’ll need a single phase inverter. And if you have a 3 phase connection, you’ll need a 3 phase inverter

How do you check what connection you have? Take a look in your meter box. You’ll see one black carriage or three at the bottom of the box. If there’s one, you have single power, and if you have three you have three phase power. Got it? Good!

Introducing Huawei Inverters

Now you know which type of string inverter you’ll need, we can get into my favourite inverter of the moment. Huawei solar inverters! Huawei is a Chinese communications and technology company. They’re now the second largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world after Samsung.

Huawei is the new kid on the block in solar energy, but by no means behind the solar power game – quite the opposite! Huawei manufactures a single phase inverter (Smart Energy Center) and 3 phase inverter (Smart String), both of which have wowed solar power experts with a few key features (and made Friday night solar power reading sessions even more exciting).

Single phase inverter – Smart Energy Center

The smart energy center inverter caught the attention of the solar community not because it’s highly efficient (98.6%), easy to install and comes in a compact design, but it’s also “battery ready”. This was the clincher for me!

Battery ready means if you decide to buy a solar battery down the track (like the Huawei LUNA energy storage system), you won’t need to buy a battery inverter (money and time saved)!

The Huawei solar inverter also has an inbuilt optimiser that adjusts the power of panel voltage to increase panel performance. You’ll know your solar panels are working to the best of their ability!

3 Phase Inverter – Smart String

So you know how we were talking about single phase vs. 3 phase inverters? Well, this is the 3 Phase – Smart String – Inverter is what you would get if you have a 3 phase household.

The Smart String is described as intelligent because it has Smart I-V Curve Diagnosis support, which means you can analyse string functionality on your device and if something is amiss, you can get it fixed and not lose efficiency.

It’s also a bloody smart device because of its intelligent control systems. If one panel is shaded, it won’t jeopardise the performance of the other panels, which means you can install more panels for higher efficiency.

What about luna power for an energy storage system?

Now that you’re across Huawei Inverters, we’re going to give you a rundown on the LUNA energy storage system – the storage system we recommend if you go for a Huawei Inverter.

Why do you need a storage system? A storage system means you can store extra solar energy and save it for peak time. You won’t be as reliant on electricity and you’ll save on your bill.

The Huawei LUNA energy storage system is pretty awesome as far as storage systems go. It’s compatible with both the single phase and 3 phase inverters. Its modular design means you can increase your energy capabilities from 5kW to 15kW just by adding additional battery blocks (they’re super slimline). And with a 100% depth of discharge, you’ll waste less energy and get more out of your battery.

With the Huawei Inverter x Luna Power duo, you can:

  • Access power 24 hours per day
  • Reduce your utility cost or cut out electricity completely
  • Backup for critical loads during power outages
  • Ensure uninterrupted operation of household appliances
  • Get emergency power in a shortage
  • Never waste energy

So in a nutshell? Huawei Inverter x Luna Power = a match made in heaven. I absolutely love these products and so will you!
